Record Cold Hits the Brainerd Lakes

Looks like we are setting over-night low records around the Brainerd Lakes Area this morning. The record low for Brainerd set back in 1956 of 17 below was easily eclipsed this morning when the mercury plunged to 25 below. Longville was coldest in the state and lower 48 states at 33 below.
All this is on top of the snow from late winter storm that dropped around a half foot of snow Tuesday and promoted the radiational cooling that resulted in the drastic temperatures.
Relief is on the way. Meteorologist Tony Schumacher says temperatures are expected to crack into the 40's this weekend.

Howes Not Alarmed 2006 Tax Numbers

The Department of Revenue says taxes in Minnesota became more regressive in 2006. State Representative Larry Howes tells KLKS News, while that's true, it's also deceptive. He says some had a good year in the stock market. While their income tax would have been higher, because they had more money, the impact of all other taxes would have been less.
Howes says he's not particularly alarmed by the numbers. He says millionaires will always pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the rest of us even in boom years, and hopes the stock market rebounds soon.

Late Winter Storm Targets the Brainerd Lakes

The Brainerd Lakes Area is under a Winter Storm Warning until 7 am Wednesday. Meteorologist Tony Schumacher says the snow could have been deeper. However, part of the storm was side-tracked by another system moving through Iowa. However, he is still expecting a major storm. Five to 9 inches of snow is predicted. Strong winds are expected to cause blowing and drifting and dangerous wind chills in the range of 25 to 35 below.
Tom Wyrk, Maintenance Supervisor for the Brainerd office of MN-Dot, says his crews are planning to work around the clock. He warns motorists that in heavy blowing snow, the plows will be difficult to see.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl says we have received fair warning on this storm, and is asking motorists to exercise good judgement.
There have already been numerous accidents around the lakes this morning from light freezing mist. A string of cars spun into the ditch 10 miles north of Little Falls on Highway 371.

Tax Refunds are Up

Tax refunds have been averaging $2,870 this year. St. Paul IRS spokesperson Carrie Resch says that's up nine percent or $230 dollars from a year ago. She tells KLKS News, for those who file electronically and use direct deposit, the wait is seven to 10 days. For those who paper file and are looking for a check in the mail, the wait is about six weeks.
Resch ways the deadline for Minnesotans to receive unclaimed refunds from 2005 is fast approaching. She says over 19,000 are owed over $17 million dollars. These are tax payers who did not file a federal income tax return for that year. To collect the money, a return for 2005 must be filed with the IRS no later than Tuesday, April 15.

Ice Tee a Success

Sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20's greeted ice golfers at the seventh annual Ice Tee Open at Moonlight Bay in Crosslake Saturday. 180 played in last year's event. Organizers said pre-registrations were running ahead of last year. $16 thousand was raised in 2008.
Conditions on the ice were good for early March, and participants had a good time. There was even a hole-in-one.
K-Lakes afternoon personality Blenda and morning man Bob Bundgaard chose hockey sticks over golf clubs as their weapons of choice.
All proceeds from the event were given to Camp Knutson.
