Area Man Soars To New Heights

SAN DIEGO (AP) — If all goes right on New Year's Eve, daredevils Robbie Maddison and Levi LaVallee will roar down the takeoff ramps on a motorcycle and snowmobile, respectively, fly over a 300-foot water gap and complete their record-setting jumps.

The side-by-side jumps at Embarcadero Marina Park on San Diego Bay will be the latest in the "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits" series.

LaVallee, of Longville, Minn., was scheduled to attempt his snowmobile jump last New Year's Eve in snowless San Diego but was seriously injured in a crash during training two weeks earlier.

He wants to break his record of 361 feet, set hours before his painful wipeout.

Maddison, an Australian who's a veteran of eye-popping New Year's Eve stunts, wants to jump 400 feet, which would break the record of 391 feet for the longest motorcycle jump.

Rescue Training Course For Professionals

On Saturday, January 28, from 8:00am - 4:00pm, a Multi-Agency Emergency Rescue Exercise will be held on the ice and in the waters of Cass Lake.

This is the 11th year of this annual exercise, sponsored by the Cass County Sheriff's Office and the Cass Lake Fire Department.

Responding to any emergency situation, the responders need to know what is available to assist them in saving lives.  This exercise allows a building of department relationships and the sahring of resources in a real life rescue to save lives.

The first group briefing will take place just after 8:00am at the access of Cass Lake, near the rest area on Highway 2, just east of Cass Lake.

Local Law Enforcement Agencies Issue Ice Warnings

The Todd County Sheriff's Office, along with other area law enforcement agencies in the area, have issued a dangerous Ice Warning for all lakes in the area.  In Todd County the Sheriff's Office is asking no one to operate ATV's and Motor Vehicles on area lakes until ice conditions improve with colder weather.

In his statement, the Sheriff cited four incidences in which vehicles have gone through the ice and riders had to be rescued by local agencies.

If individuals are traveling out onto the ice this upcoming weekend, you're asked to use extreme caution.  Above normal temperatures and high winds are forecasted for the coming days continuing the deterioration of ice on all lakes.

Similar warnings have also been issued by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office in Brainerd.
