19 Year Old Man Drowns

A 19-year old man from Laporte, Minnesota, drowned Friday night after two boats collided on Ten Mile Lake, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.  The collision, which occurred shortly before midnight, threw the victim from the boat he was driving.  Divers found his body in about 20-feet of water.  Cass County Chief Deputy TomBurch said the boat collision remains under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled.  The victim's name has not been released.

Arvig Gets Fed Broadband Aid

(AP)  Arvig Telephone customers in Crow Wing and Cass Counties will benefit from a $40 million grant to develop broadband in rural areas.

Five rural telephone cooperatives will spit the money from the Rural Recovery Act. 

More than 13 thousand households and business in 11 counties will soon be able to connect to the world wide web.

More Students at CLC

Central Lakes College in Brainerd and Staples will start the 2010-11 academic year on Monday, Aug. 23 with a fourth straight year of enrollment growth.


College officials say over 37 hundred students had registered, as of the first of August, up 12 percent from last year.  More than 25 hundred are returning students.

As many as 2,000 are high school students from area school that allow college-credit courses through CLC.

Schools joining the CIS program this year include Little Falls, Parkers Prairie, Deer River, and Northland-Remer.

Heath Care Forum in Crosslake

A panel of area legislators will discuss health care reform at the Crosslake Community Center August 18th. 

Invited lawmakers include: Bemidji State Senator Mary Olson, Fort Ripley State Senator Paul Koering, Walker State Representative Larry Howes, Brainerd State Representative John Ward and Royalton State Representative Al Doty.

They will discuss the future of Medicare coverage under the Federal Health Care reform, costs, dealing with pre-existing conditions, myths and misinformation.

The event on Wednesday, August 18th runs from 4 to 6 p.m.

Whalen Connection in B.P. Drowning

The 26-year-old Richfield man who drown in Big Pelican Lake over the weekend is the brother-in-law of Minnesota Lynx basketball star Linsay Whalen.

Nicholas Greve is the brother of Walen's husband Ben Greve, a former University of Minnesota golfer.

Greve was last seen leaving the Dockside Bar at Breezy Point Resort shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.  His body was found under the dock Sunday night.

Man's Body Found At Breezy Point

A 26-year old Richfield, Minnesota man's body was found on Sunday evening in approximately 3-feet of water, under a dock, near the Dockside Bar at Breezy Point Resort.  Crow Wing County Sheriff's officials report that Nicholas Greve was last seen leaving the Dockside Bar around 2:30am early Sunday morning.  He was reported missing Sunday Noon and authorities began their search for the missing man.  Greve's body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical examiners office for an autopsy.  Foul play is not suspected.
