C.B. Bylander, Fisheries and Wildlife Outreach Chief says that's one in ten Minnesotans. He tells KLKS News, with all the rain likely, the forest floor is bound to be quiet. He is also asking hunters to be respectful of roads and trails and not leave ruts on state or private land. Bylander says most accidents happen getting into and out of deer stands. He's also asking hunters to be careful at dawn and dusk and while loading and unloading their rifles near vehicles. Crow Wing Deer Harvest Predicted to be LowThe deer harvest will be down this year, according to Area Wildlife Supervisor Gary Drotts. He tells KLKS news, they have been working to reduce the deer herd because of complaints by farmers and gardeners. He says the plan has worked. Now, he says many of the hunting areas around Brainerd are lottery areas where antlerless permits are required. Drotts figures the deer herd is at a low point now. He anticipates 12-13 thousand deer to be harvested around Brainerd this season. Thursday, November 6, 2008Dahl Urges Deer Hunters to Be Careful Out ThereCrow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl is urging safety during the fire arms deer hunting opener this weekend. He tells KLKS News, hunters must know what's beyond the shot their about to take. He says every year their are accidents that could be avoided with a little extra care. Sheriff Dahl is also warning hunters not to cross into private property with out permission. He says ignorance of property lines is no defense. About 500 thousand Minnesota hunters take to the woods in pursuit of the white tail. The season opens a half hour before sunrise Saturday. Crow Wing County Flu ShotsThis year's flu shot is designed to protect against three strains that have been found in the southern part of the world, during their winter months. Joyce Mueller, Public Nurse Manager for the Crow Wing County Health Department, says the inoculations should help even if the the strain evolves into something different. She does not believe it's a strong one, but won't know until it actually hits the community. Nurse Mueller says both the shot and mist are equally effective. Walk-in clinics are being held around the area, as well as at the Crow Wing County Health Department weekdays during November from 3 to 4 p.m., except holidays. For more information call (218) 824-1080. Minnesota Deer Opener Saturday
The firearms season for white tail deer opens Saturday. Last Saturday it was nice and warm, this Saturday is expected to be something entirely different. Area Wildlife Supervisor Gary Drotts tells KLKS News, the law dictates the opener is the Saturday closest to November 3rd or 9th. In this case it was this Saturday the 8th. He says while it would have been pleasant sitting a deer stand last Saturday, there most likely would not have been a lot of deer movement, which is more likely this cold weekend. Pequot Lakes Mayor Cathey Malecha objects to what she says was misleading literature placed on the windshields of Church-goers Sunday morning. Among other things, the leaflets claim she and three others running for the city council favor a sales tax for Pequot. Malecha says she traveled to St. Paul some time ago to investigate the possibility of a sales tax to pay for the Highway 371 improvements and was turned down. She says other discussions on the topic were only that.
