Gull Lake Ice Update From Crow Wing County Sheriff

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's office says they need about five more inches of ice before the annual Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza can be held on Gull Lake.

Sheriff Todd Dahl says several holes were drilled in the area Thursday where the tournament is to be held. The ice was consistently in the 11 inch range.

The goal is to have 16 inches of ice throughout the tournament area prior to the January 21st event. The long range forecast does not indicate extremely cold temperatures for our area, however they are hopeful that the ice requirements will be met.

The Sheriff says there is still open water on Gull Lake and to use extreme caution when venturing out on all area lakes.

B.P Radar Run Scrubbed

The Radar Run scheduled for Breezy Point's Ice Fest Saturday has become a casualty of the warm winter.

The Pequot Lakes Brush Pilots made the decision to cancel the event Tuesday night after checking the ice.

Area DNR Conservation Officer  Nikki Shoutz tells KLKS News, it was neither thick enough or consistent enough to hold the event.

Shoutz says the ice in front of the resort is 11 inches thick, enough to host all the other events that are part of Ice Fest.

Septics Risk Freezing

The lack of snow cover is putting rural septic systems at risk this winter.

Dan Olson of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in Detroit Lakes says it could be trouble if we don’t get snow cover before temperatures really start to drop. Snow cover helps insulate septic systems and keep them from freezing.

Olson says steps can still be taken.  Place eight to twelve inches of straw, leaves, hay or other loose material over the pipes, septic tank and drain field.

Use water (the warmer the better) if you’re worried your septic system is starting to freeze. Spread out your laundry so you run one warm/hot load a day. Use the dishwasher and take hot baths. However, DO NOT leave water running all the time, as this will overload the system.

Repair any leaky plumbing fixtures or appliances.

If your septic system freezes, call a septic system professional. The M-P-C-A website includes a search tool for finding certified professionals in your area.

Cravaack Screening Bill Signed by the President

The Risk-Based Security Screening for Members of the Armed Forces Act, was signed into law by President Barack Obama. Sponsored by U.S. Representative Chip Cravaack (MN-8), the legislation requires the Transportation Security Administration to develop a separate screening process for military personnel flying on civilian aircraft.

“This is terrific news for our troops. An expedited, risk-based TSA screening process is the least we can do for our men and women in uniform and their families who sacrifice so much. It’s a privilege to see this bill pass through Congress and signed into law,” said Rep. Cravaack.

The legislation, endorsed by the U.S. Travel Association, moves toward a risk-based, intelligence-driven security screening system.
