Deer Population Sound

The Minnesota DNR has had great success in managing deer numbers recently. DNR Fish and Wildlife Director Dave Schad tells KLKS News, he has experienced the low points. In the the late 1970's, the hope was they could maintain a harvest of 100,000 per year. Now, the annual harvest is more than double that. The high point came in 2003, when hunters bagged almost 300,000 whitetails.

Schad is in Thief River Falls this weekend for the Governor opener. He expects their results will be spotty. He says they had to eliminate part of the deer herd in that area to stop the spread of bovine tuberculosis.
