Run-Off from Hard Surfaces Hard on Lakes

The Minnesota Department of natural resources is urging lakeshore owners to keep their lakeshore natural to help keep lakes healthy.

Lakes are affected by runoff from hard surfaces whether from in town or near the lake. The DNR says the impervious surfaces on private property affect the water quality of lakes and rivers in the watershed.

Homeowners are encouraged to reduce runoff by having smaller driveways and sidewalks, by curving paths to the lake, and by using surfaces that allow water to soak through.

Diverting rain into vegetated areas, rain gardens and rain barrels keeps it from carrying pollutants into the lake or river.
