Oberstar Wants Conditions on Sat-Rad Monopoly

Minnesota 8th District Congressman James Oberstar, along with four fellow Minnesota Democrats, say the merger of XM and Sirius Satellite Radio would create a "national satellite radio monopoly to the detriment of the public interest."

In a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, they ask that the FCC set aside 25 percent of the total satellite spectrum for noncommercial, minority, and emergency services.

The lawmakers would also like HD Radio technology included in all new satellite receivers to promote competition.
